MILESTONES OF 2016 Prepared by Ms. Lyne A. Abanilla – Chief Operating Officer

 

 

We are thankful that the past year was another very fruitful and fulfilling year for Physicians for Peace Philippines.

With the special support and funding from PFP US, the USAID / PGRD grant on Capacity Building, the continuing partnership with Latter Day Saints Charities and the partnership with UNICEF on Children with Disabilities, we can proudly say, 2016 could be the most productive year for PFP Philippines

Milestones 1

The first month of the year commenced with so much positivity. It was during this month that we officially started the work with our partnership with UNICEF, after series of meetings during the last quarter of the past year, simultaneously with USAID/ PGRD in progress.

Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte Health Center, serving the marginalized people in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte every Thursday. This Clinic is in addition to the clinics we have in Pampanga and Isabela.

In February, we held a Strategic Planning with our team of Optometrists, results or inputs from this activity, guided us through the very good implementation of a Capacity Building Grant from USAID PGRD with maximum reach and more efficient handling of missions in 28 Public Elementary Schools in Metro Manila and province

One significant event in February was the Burn Care and Rehabilitation Conference in Naga City with a total of 103 delegates and 53 participants attended the workshop for the Splinting Activity.  PFPP also co-sponsored the trip of Burn Care and Rehabilitation Chair, Dr. Dorothy Agsaoay to present her paper on Burn Rehabilitation at the 18th Congress of International Society for Burn Injuries (ISBI) in Miami, Florida.

The month of March  saw us signing a second Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with  Latte Day Saints Charities (LDSC), LDS committing 630 wheelchairs of various sizes and types and  130 other assistive devices of various types and sizes  for 2016. For consistent and accurate output reports, Physicians for Peace Philippines holds monthly meeting with LDSC at our office.

There were series of Walking Free (WF) missions during the month of April. Walking Free Missions continued in several regions

PFPP provided different appropriate mobility devices to many people in different places. These were the devices we provided in partnership with Latter Day Saints Charities.

Our office was busy preparing and coordinating Seeing Clearly Program (SCP) Missions for July to October as well as coordinating training of optometrists at Resources for the Blind (RBI) for Basic Clinical Low Vision, Rizal Medical Center (RMC) for Instrumentation & Ocular Emergency Training and Civitan Asia Training and Research Institute for Child Growth & Development Vision Development  & Vision Therapy Training.

Seeing Clearly Program, on Vision Screening @ School Entry and Save the Sight Of A Child, did missions in Cebu City, Culion, Palawan, Baguio City and Cavite City,

The months of July, August and September were the busiest months for Seeing Clearly Team while Walking Free continued with its missions. Seeing Clearly Program covered schools in Manila, Cavite City, Baguio City, Culion, Palawan, Quezon City, Rizal Province, Cebu City, Isabela Province, Makati City and Paranaque City. At the end of this period, we have been able to serve 6,357 children in 28 schools while Satellite Optical Clinics and communities served a total of 5,040.

While weekly meetings were held in the office for the development of a package for Children with Disabilities (CWDs), some packet of meetings outside were also being held. Training for our accounting staff at UNICEF also happened this month of June, as well as the series of training  of optometrists as part of the USAID/PGRD Capacity Building Grant.

It was in July when we had our “Art for Peace”  exhibit, as part of our Fund Development Committee activities  with  Vice President Leni Robredo as our  guest of honor. This generated one hundred twenty thousand pesos (P120,000.00) for PFPP.

In between, PFPP and  UNICEF partnership got the approval of the package for Children with Disabilities from PhilHealth, even before the target date.

In September, we officially created the Communications Committee to work hand in hand with our Fund Development Committee  to spread the good news of the work we do at PFPP. The official PFPP website was created and launched

In the same month , we saw the blessing and the opening of the PFP Prosthetics and Orthotics Center in Southern Philippine Medical Center (SPMC) in Davao.

There were series of meetings in October. We paid a courtesy call to the Office of Department of Health (DOH) Secretary. We met with  Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) for a grant  request; we participated in the Conference of the Coalition for Global Hearing Healthcare;  we attended the Summit on Partnership against Poverty by the office of Vice-President Leni Robredo. Walking Free and Seeing Clearly missions continued.

Physicians for Peace Philippines marked 18 years of service in the country this year and Immediately after our successful hosting of our PFPP Partners and Volunteers Recognition Night, more meetings with UNICEF were held on the creation of hubs in Davao and at Philippine General Hospital (PGH).  A Care Coordinated Center for Children with Disabilities will soon be established at PGH and in SPMC Davao.

Milestones 17

At the end of 2016 we know we all did our work, Board and staff exceedingly well, hitting targets,  even went beyond,  and meeting objectives  .  We also concluded a USAID grant proposal on time and within time meeting the deadline last December 16. The PFPP Board completed four quarterly meetings and two special meetings.

We look forward to an even better year ahead awaiting positive responses and approval of grants we proposed to UNICEF, PAGCOR and USAID / PGRD.
