Of the five senses that we have, our sense of sight is the most important and most dominant. Vision gives us the ability to see everything and allows us to walk free and safe. It also leads us to have another kind of vision or a picture of goals that helps us in pursuing our dreams, why it is so important.
The Rotary Club of Intramuros Manila for so many years shares an advocacy with its cost effective method in identifying children with visual impairment or eye conditions that might lead to a vision loss. For this rotary year under the leadership of Inspiring President Annie Cu Gallardo, the vision screening was held on October 11, 2018 at the Lakandula Elementary School in Tondo, Manila. Hundreds of children from the 10 sections of Kinder and Grade 1 were examined, led by our very own Past District Governor Lyne Abanilla who is a member of the Physicians for Peace Philippines together with two optometrist and 11 Rotaractors of the Pamantasan Ng Lungsod Ng Maynila and their adviser Jo Macasieb.
With reference to the American Optometric Association (AOA), vision screening should start from 6 months old infants for their first comprehensive eye exam and an additional eye exam at age 3 and just before they enter their first grade, at about age 5 or 6. From more than a hundred children diagnosed, 23 were identified with the need of prescription glasses 👓 where our club will deliver for free in a week’s time.
